WELCOME TO EAGLES
Eagles are our fantastically named 5/6 class. We are taught by Mrs. Lever and Mrs. Gallagher. |
Please see below for our Eagles Autumn 2020 Welcome letter
Dear Parents / Carers,
It has been so lovely to welcome the children back to school this week and see all their lovely faces after such a long time. I cannot believe how much they have grown! They have come back with great enthusiasm, spark and many stories about what they have learnt or done during lockdown and the summer.
I thought I would give you an update on the things that have happened (and will happen this term) in Eagles class. I am going to be teaching the children all day on Monday and Tuesday, Wednesday afternoon and Thursday and Friday morning. The other times they will be taught by Mrs Gallagher and throughout the week their learning will be assisted by Mrs Peters.
The classroom has had a change around and we are very lucky to have a brand new interactive whiteboard. The children were all really impressed when they first saw it and we can’t wait to discover all of the learning features it has.
Topic
Our topic in Eagles this term is going to be World War Two. We will be beginning this topic in a few weeks time when we have some Year 4 pupils joining us and will be a complete class. We will be looking at significant events that happened during the Second World War and their impact. If you have any personal family stories or memorabilia you are willing to share with us, we would love to hear about it. The story we will be studying alongside this is ‘Letters from the Lighthouse’ by Emma Carroll. A full topic overview will shortly be appearing on the school’s website where you can see in detail what your child will be learning throughout the term.
P.E
P.E will be on Monday afternoons, with myself and Wednesday mornings with a Premiere Sports Coach. Pupils should have their correct P.E kits, including footwear to change into on these days. Long hair will need to be tied up and any jewellery removed or covered in tape. Please can P.E kits remain in school until half term when they can be taken home and washed. This will hopefully minimise the amount of bags etc coming in and out of school. Obviously if P.E kit gets wet or very smelly it will be sent home sooner!
Homework
Eagles will be set three pieces of homework on a Friday morning each week.
They will be:
Spelling: A spelling rule (or words) will be taught to your child each week in class. They will then have a list of approximately ten words to learn each week. An online spelling activity will usually accompany the learning of the words. This will be set on DB primary or from the website https://spellingframe.co.uk/. Every three weeks the children will be having a spelling test in class on a selection of the words they have been learning.
Times tables / Maths: An online game will be set on https://mathsframe.co.uk/ to help develop knowledge and speed of recall on multiplication and division facts.
Homework will be set on a Friday and due in the following week. Homework instructions will be sent home each week.
If you have any concerns or wish to discuss anything with myself or Mrs Gallagher, please telephone or email the school office and we can arrange a meeting.
We are really excited to start the new school year and look forward to teaching your child.
With kind regards,
Mrs Lever Mrs Gallagher

READING REFLECTIONS
So once a week we will be curling up with a book in our Reading for Pleasure session (and Mrs. Gallagher too!). We will also be thinking about what we're reading and spreading the news of our great books by completing activities like the ones below:
So once a week we will be curling up with a book in our Reading for Pleasure session (and Mrs. Gallagher too!). We will also be thinking about what we're reading and spreading the news of our great books by completing activities like the ones below:
- Compare and contrast this BOOK with another BOOK or FILM.
- Be specific– what are the similarities and differences etc.
- Draw the main character from a book you have recently read. Show them as a baby, middle aged and as an older person.
- For example if you drew Harry Potter as a baby, he might be casting spells on his mum to feed him lots of yummy food.
- Write a character guide to the characters you think are important in your book. Choose quotes about the specific characters to include in your guide.
- Choose your favourite language and sentence structures that you think make the book come to life-what techniques does the author use? Choose examples and produce a poster to show what you have chosen.
- Draw up a family tree of the characters in your book.
- Imagine your main characters can be granted 2 wishes half way through your story-what do you think they would wish for and why?
- Would you like to live in your book’s world? Yes or No? But you have to say WHY and use evidence from your text.
- Choose three important events from the book-why are they important to the story?
- Using speech bubbles, draw a conversation between two characters in your story.
- Make a newspaper front page for an important event from your book.
- Make a map of your book’s world.
- Write a diary entry for one of your characters.....remember to use I!
- Choose a character from your book, imagine you are them and write a story from their point of view.
